Clear Lens extraction in Birmingham

The removal of a non-cataractous natural lens of the eye, with or without intraocular lens placement as a refractive procedure is referred to as clear lens extraction (CLE) which also popularly known as refractive lens exchange (RLE).

For more than 100 years, this refractive procedure or clear lens extraction procedure has been around and, throughout that time the procedure has been engulfed in the sea of controversy. Slowly and gradually, the reputation and credibility of this procedure came out of blues and in the past 5-10 years, in comparison to other refractive procedures, CLE has slowly become accepted as a viable alternative for selected patients.

In case of very high amounts of myopia or commonly referred to as nearsightedness, clear lens extraction CLE or Refractive Lens Exchange has emerged. Removing the crystalline lens from inside the eye is involved in this technique.

In some cases, in comparison to LASIK, clear lens extraction or CLE may become a better option. However, with clear lens extraction, there is an increased risk of retinal detachment. Some other serious complications may also occur with this procedure. It is an internal eye procedure.

Since the natural focusing mechanism is removed, patients who have CLE also lose all ability to change focus after the procedure. After CLE surgery, to see objects up close, reading glasses are required regardless of the patient's age.

It is unlikely that CLE can become a mainstream vision correction procedure because of all these limitations and shortcomings. At present, of all vision correction surgeries performed in the U.S., clear lens extraction accounts for less than 1%. Still, CLE may be a viable option for extremely nearsighted individuals who cannot tolerate wearing contact lenses.

In the decade of 90s, laser eye surgery and the technology associated with it came into being. This technology has grown with leaps and bounds and registered an impressive growth with passage of time. With the use of this technology, the vision of millions of people worldwide has seen improvement. The popularity of LASIK can be attributed to the desire of people who want to end their dependency on glasses or contacts. Another factor for its popularity is that the surgery also offers high success rate. There is considerable improvement in the quality of life and many people who have had LASIK laser eye surgery have observed lots of changes in their life and are satisfied with the outcome.

Although it is one of many eye surgery options, LASIK is the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure. To explain the procedure in layman’s language, one can say that in the eye, a flap is cut in its top layer and folded back so a laser can reshape the eye surface and then the flap is put back to let the eye heal. As the procedure is very simple, there is nothing to be afraid of as the procedure. These days many companies perform this surgery without battling their eyelid.
